Presidents Message
The picture at the top of the 2011 newsletter tells us that change is underway. Instead of the usual suspects that have adorned this periodical we now have our own top player to support. Good luck in 2011 Milos!
2011 marks the end of our direct affiliation with Springfield and Fairview Tennis Clubs. Deer Run members will be required to join those sister clubs directly if they wish to be members of multiple clubs. No matter how you look at it, Community Tennis Clubs remain a fabulous value for the citizens of Mississauga. Deer Run members will retain the advantage of joining any Springfield tournament as if they were Springfield members. That’s a great advantage and I thank Springfield’s President, Sharon Randall, for extending that offer to Deer Run members.
Our club is healthy with new people taking on roles on your behalf and our financial situation is strong. The City of Mississauga is asking us to cover off some costs that they previously absorbed but we are in a good position to do so. The money we have on hand is your money. It is there for the eventual resurfacing of the courts and any other facility improvements that are necessary.
Your input is always welcome. Feel free to message any of us, anytime.
Fun Fair
Things change. Attendance at the annual fun fair has waned in recent years. We are going to look at a new formula in 2011. The “New” event will look a lot like the old event with the exception that it will take place in June and we will promote is separately in an attempt to drive up the participation. Stay tuned.
Spring Tune-Ups
Where can you join a tennis club for $40 and get a free tennis lesson from a Professional Instructor as part of the fee? This years sessions will run as follows: Saturday April 30th, 2:30 – 4:30 PM, Wed May 4th, 8:00-10:00 PM, Saturday May 7th 1:00 – 3:00 PM, and Wed May 9th 9:00 – 11:00 PM. There will be rainout dates, if needed. These sessions are popular and participation is limited to 10 persons per session so sign up quick.
House Leagues
The club’s goal is to provide its members with an opportunity to play tennis and improve their game in a friendly, competitive environment. The Men’s House League runs on Mondays from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm. The Women’s House League runs on Tuesdays during the same hours. Each league can accept a maximum of 36 players on a first come, first served basis. The Mixed League runs on Wednesday nights and has traditionally leaned more towards the social aspects of the sport.
The cost is $20 for the Men’s and Women’s Leagues and $10 for the Mixed League. Participants will receive a can of balls at the beginning of the season. Trophies will be awarded to winners at the end of the season. House league directors retain the right to make adjustments to their respective leagues to ensure that a competitive balance is maintained.
House league members are expected to take their commitment seriously. If you are unable to play due to holidays, work commitments, etc, it is your responsibility to get a substitute. House league directors have the authority to replace anyone who does not honour their commitment.
DRTC affiliations with both Springfield & Fairview Tennis Clubs
The previous arrangement we had with Springfield and Fairview has come to an end. Deer Run Members who also are interested in joining our sister clubs will have to do so on an individual basis. Deer Run members will be able to join Tournaments at Springfield for the fee that they charge their members. That is a great deal for those of our members who wish to take part in tournament play. Contact Springfield’s President, Sharon Randall, at 905-279-7239 for further information.
Tournaments
Experience has taught us that Deer Run Members are not big tournament players. This is why our club championship, The President's Cup, takes place entirely on one day: a half day for women and a half day for men. This year will mark the 7th year for this tournament. Come on out for a few hours of fun with your other club members.
Deer Run members have to right to enter any Springfield Tournament at Springfield member rates. The complete tournament schedule follows:
June 4th Mystery Partner Mixed Doubles Tournament (Springfield)
June 18th – Little Aces Red ½ Court Juniors. (Springfield)
July 9th – Open Mixed Doubles (Springfield)
July 23rd – Junior Singles (Ages 12-17) (Springfield)
August 6th – Men's and Women’s Open Doubles (Springfield)

Gate/Lock
The key lock on the gate restricts non-members from being on the courts, reduces our insurance liability, and cuts down on vandalism. Key cost is $5.00. This year, two keys will be distributed for family memberships. Keys must be picked up on registration night.
A Final Word
Nothing causes more angst that the sharing of courts. Here is how it works.
- Court One changes on the hour and half hour; Court Two at :15 and :45.
- When both courts are occupied, the arriving players are to place a raquet on court next to rotate off. This is not necessarily the court that has been playing the longest! The players vacating the court may then place a raquet on the court to change next. In this way, three groups are able to share two courts by playing for thirty minutes while sitting out for 15 minutes.
If you experience a lack of cooperation with this, please get the name of the players who refuse to cooperate and report the incident to the Club President. The club will follow-up. |
